Ballon d'Or 2026 Preview as Kane, Mbappé, Yamal and Dembélé Head to London for the 70th Edition

Four Contenders Vie for the 2026[1]  Ballon d’Or in London

The 70th Ballon d'Or will be presented on 26 October, and for the first time the ceremony leaves Paris for London. Many fans will follow the evening through broadcaster apps and social media, and Android users who want to keep an eye on the related markets can install the Afropari apk on their phones or any other apps to track the latest news. Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappé, Lamine Yamal and holder Ousmane Dembélé are among the nominees on a 30-man shortlist shaped by a World Cup summer. This article focuses on these four because of their headline achievements, but the official shortlist is not a ranking.

Why London hosts the 70th edition

The organizers picked London to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the first Ballon d’Or, received by Stanley Matthews in 1956.

The male trophy is selected by journalists from the best 100 countries according to FIFA rankings, while the female one – by journalists from the best 50 countries. Judging is based on players’ performances in the evaluation period that lasted from 3 August 2025 to 19 July 2026. According to the rules, performances from after 19 July 2026 do not affect selection for the 2026 trophy.

Closing date is important since 19 July 2026 was the day of the World Cup final in North America.

Kane and his 73-goal season

Among the four players covered in this analysis, Kane boasts the most outstanding scoring statistics. The captain of the England team managed 73 goals in both club and international football during the assessment period, winning the Bundesliga trophy with Bayern Munich.

He has maintained good form since the new season started, albeit that this does not belong to the 2026 evaluation period and is indicative of his present club form and not the case for the Ballon d’Or. In the Champions League game played on 13 October, he netted two goals in the second half at Stavanger, once from the penalty spot and another time from the head using a Joshua Kimmich pass.

Bayern were unable to defeat Viking, who drew 3-3 with them, with Herman Haugen one of the vital players for the hosts.

Mbappé and a World Cup record

It is important to understand that Mbappé’s case is mostly based on the World Cup because here he created a new record for himself. In particular, he scored ten goals during the World Cup of 2026, reaching a total number of 22 in the World Cups of 2018, 2022 and 2026, beating Lionel Messi.

Yamal and Spain's world title

Spain clinched the World Cup by defeating Argentina in the final by 1-0 on 19 July. Lamine Yamal has been an important player in Spain's success in this World Cup, which is covered by the evaluation period.

This World Cup achievement makes up the bulk of his nomination for the 2026 award. His earlier season performances in Barcelona, where he made two assists in a recent Champions League match, is not covered under this evaluation period.

His teammate at Spain, Rodri, is also part of this shortlist. Spain's world cup success would help the case of many Spanish players.

Dembélé and the PSG factor

Defending his title, Holder Ousmane Dembélé has had another great season. The Champions League trophy was won once more by Paris Saint-Germain after defeating Arsenal via penalty shootout in the final match held in Budapest on 30 May.

Some of the other players who have been shortlisted include Achraf Hakimi, Vitinha, João Neves, Nuno Mendes, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Among the nominees, Hakimi happens to be the top African player.

The table below summarises the main arguments for the four players featured in this article, listed in no particular order:

Other nominees include Erling Haaland, Jude Bellingham, Vinícius Júnior, Declan Rice and Lautaro Martínez, the only nominee from Serie A. Eight-time winner Lionel Messi is also on the list once again.

The women's race without Bonmatí

The women’s tournament will also get an entirely different feel since the reigning three-time champion Aitana Bonmatí is not in contention for the award anymore, after breaking her fibula in November 2025.

Some of the most renowned players in the women’s nomination list include Alexia Putellas, Ewa Pajor and Melchie Dumornay.

Ballon d'Or odds and how specials markets work

The Ballon d’Or belongs to the specials markets, where prices reflect public and media expectations. Unlike match markets, the outcome depends on a vote rather than on a game.

●      There might be price movements due to high-profile games, but games after 19 July 2026, including Kane’s brace in Stavanger, are not included in the 2026 eligibility period.

●      Price movements might reflect the public feeling, but they will not affect the official voting criteria.

●      In order to understand the prices, it is better to compare them to the performances and achievements of the players in the eligible period.

Even so, reading these markets has clear limits, especially when the jury includes journalists from 100 countries with very different priorities.

Countdown to the Palladium

The nominees range from a goalscoring machine, someone who made history at the World Cup, a world champion and the current holder to several others among the 30-strong list. Each one comes with his/her own case on why the award should go to him/her.

The winner will be unveiled on 26 October at the London-based ceremony. No matter who wins, the 70th edition of the Ballon d’Or, hosted by France Football and UEFA as co-organisers, will certainly be remembered for both the change of location and the diverse list of nominees.
